Theodore Roosevelt Went On A Year-Long Hunting Spree
Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th president of the US left office in 1909 and went to South Africa for year-long hunting with his son Kermit, a trip that almost killed him.
For the next seven years, he travelled by boat, train and caravan around the northeast of the continent, going for elephants, rhinos, hippos, snakes, zebra, monkeys and various other creatures, bringing many of the carcasses back to America for scientific study.
George Washington Worked On A Farm
First president George Washington became President twice. On his retirement from the presidency in 1797, Washington went back to his Virginian estate Mount Vernon plantations.
He died two years later after being taken ill while riding a horse around his plantation in a snowstorm.
Thomas Jefferson Found A University
Thomas Jefferson left presidency in 1809 and devoted himself to the field of education, founding the University of Virginia – chartered in 1819. It was the only college in America at the time with no religious affiliation.
Jimmy Carter Won A Nobel Peace Prize
“I can’t deny I’m a better ex-president than I was a president,” said the 39th incumbent Jimmy Carter in 2005. After getting done with his role as the President, Jimmy Carter decided to immerse himself in humanitarian work and established the Carter Center in 1982. He won a Nobel Prize for Peace, mainly for his biggest achievements in near-eradication of Guinea worm disease, that affected millions.
Herbert Hoover Went Fishing
Herbert Hoover even bagged the title “Hoover, the Fishing President” in one of his biographies. Hoover loved to spend some time off by the River even when he was in the White House, and continue doing the same once he was replaced by Franklin Roosevelt in 1933.
He later published Fishing for Fun in 1963, one year before he died, which was famous for one of his lines “All men are equal before fish”.
Barack Obama Went For A Break
Barack and Michelle Obama went for a long break after they left the White House in 2017. The couple also received a joint $65 million advance from Penguin Random House’s Crown Publishing Group for their respective memoirs.
They also purchased a nine-bedroom home in the Kalorama neighbourhood with the intention of staying for two years so that his younger daughter, Sasha, could complete high school in Washington.
