What better way to enhance the stature of the Swiss Alps than to reflect its beauty and multiply it. Artist Doug Aitken did just this with his latest installation called Mirage Gstaad. It is a ranch-style home whose walls are completely covered by mirrors. This structure now sits in all its glory with the snow-covered peaks in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Mirage Gstaad, the house made of mirrors is entirely in-sync with the landscape and almost disappears as the surface tends to camouflages with the mountains and evergreen trees. The house has a kaleidoscopic effect because of the angular interior that bends light. This leads to creating unexpected yet breath-taking reflections.

This house is modeled after a classic Californian ranch home design from the early 20th century. It acts as an “echo chamber” that continually creates a feedback loop interrupted by a human-made object.

The Mirage Gstadd is Aitken’s third installment. It was first placed in Palm Springs back in 2017, and in Detroit in 2018.
The genius, Aitken’s work will remain in the Alps for two years while “reflecting and interacting with the mountain landscape over the changing seasons.”
