Aptly described as bizarre memorabilia, the toilet seat used by the infamous dictator Adolf Hitler at his retreat in Bavaria, Germany, is now up for auction. Yes, you read that right.
The toilet seat used in World War II is expected to be sold for as high as £15,000 (around $20,500), according to Alexander Historical Auctions.
This unusual relic was taken by a US soldier from the Nazi leader’s private bathroom in the Bavarian Alps. Borch was one of the first American soldiers on the scene when they reached Hitler’s home.
Apparently, he was told by senior officers to ‘get what you want’ from the Berghof. The house had been badly damaged by Allied bombing in the last days of the war.
And now his family has decided to cash in on the toilet seat at an auction in Maryland. The auction company said: “One can scarcely imagine the plotting the tyrant undertook while contemplating the world from atop this perch.”
When Borch was asked by another soldier why he was carrying a toilet seat, he replied, “Where do you think Hitler put his a**?” The incident is reportedly mentioned in the book ‘Hitler’s Mountain’, a copy of which is being auctioned along with the seat.
The toilet seat measures 19 inches from front to back and 16 inches wide and has two chromed steel fittings joining the two pieces. It has two pictures of the soldier and his immediate superior officer at the ‘Eagles Nest’ at Berchtesgaden. The relic also has a satirical anti-Hitler newspaper clipping.
The auction company says that the items have remained untouched in the basement of the family’s home.
