Harpy Eagle also called as Royal-Hawk, is one of the largest and most powerful eagles. And their name ‘Harpy Eagle’ is derived from a legendary hybrid (a half-human and half-bird personification) from Greek & Roman mythology of the same name.
These birds of prey can grow up to 42 inches long, with their wingspan reaching a record of 7.5 feet. Harpy Eagles weigh up to 20 pounds and the females weigh twice as their mates.
At first, people think this is a person in a costume. But, no…
These rare birds are found in rainforests, usually in the upper canopy layer of tropical lowland forests. Due to the destruction of their habitat, their number is now less than 50.000 worldwide.
Their rear talons are about 3-4 inches long – and that’s the same size as a grizzly bear’s claws!
They eat much larger things than other birds. Monkeys, tree porcupines, sloths, coatis, birds, snakes, lizards are on their list. No doubt they are at the top of their food chain.
Also, do you know that these birds were the original inspiration for the design of Fawkes the Phoenix in the Harry Potter film series? Isn’t that cool?
