When you are living in a heavenly place like Victoria, Canada, art and inspiration is all that surrounds you. Artist Debra Bernier turns driftwood into mystical sculptures. Debra not only uses wood, but also adds elements of nature like shells, clay, stones, and other found objects to compliment her feminine figures.
Bernier creates these beautiful Venus figurines that are a perfect blend of modern art and nature. Every time you look at driftwood, it evokes feelings of end and mortality, but Bernier’s driftwood sculptures give it a whole new lively meaning.
“The finished pieces are a reflection of not only my life, my family, and children, but of an eternal, sacred connection we all share with nature,” she told BoredPanda.
“When I work with driftwood, I never start with a blank canvas. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture, created by the caresses of the waves and wind,” Debra shares. “The wood tells a story and I try to think of its journey as I hold it in my hand. I extend or shorten the curves and contours that already exist into familiar shapes of animals or peoples’ faces.
Her original work and prints are also available on her Etsy shop. Here’s some of her most stunning work!
