Juho Könkkölä is an origami artist who recently took to Instagram to release images of his latest work. He has created an origami samurai using only a single sheet of paper. Yes! Only. A. SINGLE. SHEET. OF.PAPER.
And, to say that his creation is incredible amazing is an understatement.
Artist Juho Könkkölä creates paper figures (they are pretty amazing!) And you want to know the best part? He doesn’t use any scissors or glue to make these figures. It’s just detailed folding. That’s what makes this an amazing origami.
Könkkölä’s newest piece is a samurai. The warrior not only has a sword in hand but also a few traditional armors such as the pointed kabuto (helmet) and the scaly haidate (thigh armor).
With this level of intricacy, it’s hard to believe that this samurai was crafted without ever piercing the paper.
“I got the idea for the character from my previous origami samurai warrior, which I did almost a year ago. The artwork was a success on its own, it pushed my style in a direction that I didn’t expect, but I knew it was something that needed to be explored more. But it still left me thinking that I could fold a better samurai.”
“Folded from a 95cm x 95cm sheet of Wenzhou paper. My first work of 2021, probably one of the most detailed designs from me so far. It took a long 3-month process to design and fold the character, I decided to put some of the other projects on hold to finish it. There were a lot of challenges to make it work, but I am satisfied with the results,” he wrote while sharing the images.
There are several hundreds of steps to fold it from the square and there are probably thousands of individual folds,” he said in a statement. “The asymmetry in the design allowed me to include (a) sword on only one arm while being able to make the character look symmetric.”
